How to Use Other Email with Android

This chapter is for the Email app, which should be used for services like Hotmail, Yahoo mail etc. You start the Email app by tapping its icon - many users have it on a home-screen (perhaps in a folder) - or in the App Drawer. The icon varies by version and device manufacturer:

In the examples below we have used the Android 4 version without a Menu button. At the end of this chapter you'll see the example screens for Android devices with a Menu button. There are quite a few variations as the device manufacturers have tailored their apps, so the icons, button layout, menu options, etc. can vary quiet a lot, but the principles are similar. So treat these as examples.

Setup Email Account

First you have to setup your other email account(s):

Settings -> Accounts & Sync -> Add Account -> Email

On some devices the last step may be marked as Yahoo Mail instead of Email. In the setup you'll need to provide the email address and your password, whether you should use this account as your default send-from account, etc.

Select Email Account, Manage the Inbox

Android allows you to have multiple email accounts. If you only have one, then of course the email app will only show that, otherwise you can change the account by tapping the account name at the top of the screen.

At the bottom of the screen you have these actions you can choose:
Compose, Search, Show all Folders, Refresh, Overflow menu (Settings)

Then you select one or more emails as exemplified in the middle screen below, just tap each one's empty square to the left, then perform one of the actions. After the selection, the action menu at the bottom will give you the following choices:
Archive, Delete, Change Labels, Star mark

Compose Email

When you're at the inbox then tap the leftmost of the bottom icons: compose, After you've chosen the compose action, you will see the right screen below. Just fill in the To, Subject and Compose fields then tap the Send arrow at the top to send the email.

In the left screen below we just tap one of the emails as an example. In the middle screen (step 2) you can see the immediate actions. At the bottom you have:
Delete, Move (to another Folder), Next email above, Next email below, Overflow (Mark as Unread, Settings)

At the top-right you have the following:
Star mark, Reply, Overflow

If you tap the Overflow you'll get to the additional actions as seen in step 3:
Reply all, Forward

Email 2.3 examples - Samsung TouchWiz

You start the Email app by tapping its icon:

Here we have the same emails as above, using Samsung's TouchWiz for Android 2.3.

Select Email Account, Select Labels (Folders)

The left screen enables you to choose the email account (you can label them when you set up the accounts). The middle screen shows the inbox, on the top left you can see the chosen Yahoo inbox, then if you tap the Inbox icon them the right screen will appear so you can choose another label (or Folder).

Act on Emails in the Inbox

Samsung's TouchWix is a bít different from other email apps. In others you typically select one or more emails, then what operation to perform. In TouchWiz it's the other way around. You first pick the operations (e.g. Delete), then you will have the opportunity to pick the emails you want to delete.

Compose email

To compose mail tap the Compose icon on the top-right at the inbox, after you've finished with the email tap the Send button in middle of the right screen:

Tap Compose in Inbox Enter text, then Send

In the left screen below we just tap one of the emails for an example. In the right you can see the immediate actions that are available. In the top-left you have the navigation to go to the previous/next emails:

In the top-right you have the actions for the email you have selected. They are:
Move to Folder, Delete, Reply or Forward

Here we have the same emails as above, using an Android 2.3 version called CM7.1.

The left screen shows the inbox, then you press the Menu button to get to the right screen, showing the actions you can do.

The left screen below shows the inbox after you've selected two emails by tapping the box for each. At the bottom you see the actions you can perform, then to the right you have the additional actions that will be presented to you after tapping the Menu button.

Compose Email

To compose mail press the Menu button then select Compose from the inbox, after you've finished with the email tap the Send button in the right screen.
