How to use the Android Calendar

The Google Calendar is normally coming with your Android device. This is a great and very useful app that can help you get organized.

Features

  • Share your schedule: Let your co-workers, family, and friends see your calendar, and view schedules that others have shared with you.
  • Use multiple calendars: You can create different calendars to help organize the different parts of your life. You'll always have one primary calendar for your account, you can have as many secondary calendars as you'd like, for example, a calendar for your family, your sports team, etc.
  • Share your schedule: Let your co-workers, family, and friends see your calendar, and view schedules that others have shared with you.
  • Use your calendar on your mobile: With two-way syncing to your mobile phone’s built-in calendar or a mobile version of Google Calendar you can access your calendar while you’re on the go.
  • Never forget events: Customizable reminders help you stay on schedule.
  • Send invitations: Invite other people to events on your calendar. Guests can RSVP to your events by email or via Google Calendar.
  • Sync with other desktop applications: Access your calendar however and whenever you want by syncing events with Microsoft Outlook, Apple iCal and Mozilla Sunbird.
  • Work offline: Know where you’re supposed to be even when you don’t have Internet access.

Get to your Calendar on a PC

You log on to your normal Gmail PC account then tap Calendar as this screenshot shows:

You start the Calendar app by tapping its icon, many users have it in the App Dock, or on a home-screen, or in the App Drawer:

Let's look at some Android 4 examples. The leftmost screen shows the weekly view. On the top you have three actions: Tap the leftmost and you can change from week to day or month or agenda style, as shown in the middle screen. The rightmost screen shows the monthly view.

The 2nd action item on the top takes you to today's date. The rightmost, Overflow menu shows the options in the left screen below. On of them is to select which calendars to display as the right screen example shows.

You can add a new event by just tapping on e.g. the Day view at a specific time, or use the overflow menu's New event to add one. You then get to the middle screen below, you need to put in some name for the event and start & end times. You can tick All day if it's such an event.

A very useful function is to select Repeat which is shown in the right screen, where you can see the various options. Don't forget to tap on Done at the top-right part of the screen to save your event.
